LECTURE 1: skipper Gene Grossman starts out right at the beginning, by showing that anyone, any age can us a sextant to navigate. He then explains what Celestial Navigation measures, what the sextant does and how to use the Nautical Almanac. Also defined and explained are Latitude, Longitude, Zenith Distance, GP, Declination, Apparent Local Noon, GMT (now called UTC), Hour Angles, Dip Correction, Limb Correction and all the other words and phrases, definitions and theory you should know before you try to make your first actual show with a sextant. LECTURE 2: Paul Miller, former instructor at the United States Naval Academy and owner of California Sailing Academy, shows how to hold, adjust, use and read a sextant. He then goes on to take you through a sun shot at Local Apparent Noon, filling in each line of the worksheet as he goes along. These two lectures are a complete introductory course in Celestial Navigation, and just using this information, numerous sailors have made ocean crossing, navigating by the Sun Noon Shot. A free Noon Shot worksheet is included with this video. If you still feel that this program is a little too advanced for you, please check out our other title, "Celestial Navigation for the Complete Idiot," also available from Amazon.com - and they are both also available as DVD's.
