Summary: An Introduction to Navigation
Comment: The most important thing to do with your boat is to travel safely to where you want to go. The basic tools are: parallel ruler, triangle, course plotter, and a one-armed protractor. Dividers can measure distance. A hand bearing compass for fixing points. Binoculars for distant viewing. Chart No. 1 defines the meaning of all symbols. The NOAA publishes charts for individual area. The TSD computer measures time, speed, and distance; it needs a watch with a sweep-second hand. You must have the latest edition of any chart. Charts show depths at low tide and the LORAN lines. Longitude and latitude (E-W) lines show position (coordinates). Each degree of latitude equals 60 nautical miles. West longitude is west of zero degrees (Greenwich, England). Latitude lines are equal distances apart. A compass rose on a map show s direction for a chart. The identification and sighting of three landmarks will identify position. Red marks are for starboard, green for port, and mark a channel.

Deviation is how a compass is affected by other objects (metals, magnets, etc.). Non-ferrous materials will not affect it. Variations are caused by the earth's surfaces. "Can dead men vote twice?" The film shows how a true course leads to a compass course. Deduced or dead reckoning is derived from course and speed. Speed, time, and distance are inter-related. Waypoints are places on a course line. Dead reckoning is used when there are no landmarks. Bearing lines allow fixing your position. LORAN is used to get a bearing. Single object bearings can get a position (bow and beam). Other methods are described with examples. The explain the Rules of the Road for meeting, crossing, or overtaking.

The two speakers lack the tan that comes from many hours in the outdoors.
