Summary: Extender is more like a pretender...
Comment: I have not benchmarked the unit, but I haven't found that much of an appreciable difference between the built in wi-fi card and the external antenna. I have used it in a parking lot with 3 different wi-fi sources available and did not see a difference whether the big antenna was on or the little 1 (20Db vs. 7Db). Neither of them were able to connect from where I was. The label with the 20Db antenna boasted 3 mile range. My question is where? Nebraska maybe. The most noticable difference was inside. Inside the performance of the antenna was hands down better (went from a fading 2 bars to solid 5). This was with the 7Db which was a nice bonus to find in the package. Bottom line: If your wireless card goes, it is a more than ample replacement. War-driving it may be disappointing. Item shipping was lightning quick. I am satisfied with the purchase.

The Laptop Folding WiFi Range Extender Antenna is a high performance range extension WiFi antenna and mount system designed to be mounted on the back of a laptop case and extend the WiFi range up to 1/4 mile (400m.) The self-powered USB model has a range of ½ mile (800m.) Actual range increase is dependent on the antenna model, environmental conditions, and local interference. Please read the enclosed instructions for suggestions on obtaining maximum performance. Extending only 12" (30cm) above the back of the laptop, the antenna is very portable and easily pivots and collapses to be completely hidden when not in use. The 2x power model extends 8" (20cm). Fully compatible with 802.11b, 802.11g, and Bluetooth devices, the antenna is very lightweight - weighing less than 3 ounces (85 gm.). The design is flexible and allows mounting to the left or right side of the screen and can be affixed using removable self-adhesive strips or Velcro pads, both of which are included. Please consult Artic Manufacturing's online help for information on which model will best fit your WiFi device. Models are available for RP-SMA, MC (Lucent/Orinoco/Proxim), MMCX (Cisco/Engenius), RP-MMCX (SMC), and u.FL (mini-PCI) connectors. The self-powered USB model is compatible withe all PCs and Macs.
